Men are disproportionately involved in violence, both as perpetrators and victims. They are more likely to die from violent acts and are more often involved in physical confrontations. Additionally, men are more likely to engage in risky behaviors, such as reckless driving, excessive alcohol consumption, and using substances, which can lead to serious health and legal consequences.
These behaviors are often rooted in social and cultural norms about masculinity that associate being male with being tough and risk-taking. To counteract these behaviors, it’s important to redefine societal norms around masculinity to promote healthier, non-violent forms of expression and decision-making.
Preventative measures can include education programs that start young and continue through adulthood, focusing on emotional regulation, conflict resolution, and the dangers of substance abuse. Community initiatives can also provide positive outlets for aggression and energy, such as sports, arts, and mentoring programs that connect men with positive role models.
